Zakka-along Week 18!

I'm so excited that my week (18 for those keeping track) has finally arrived in the zakka-along, hosted by Lyndsey and Sukie - two rad people, in case you were wondering.

My project is the Bread Basket and it is stinking cute! My only regret is that I classed down the picture by photographing hot dog buns in the basket!

It's still a cute and useful basket that easily holds a dozen cheap hot dog buns. I bet it would hold 8 large scones too.

But that's only a guess.

At 4"x9", the basket is almost perfect for a loaf! I think it would be super cute to gift your christmas baking in one of these. So consider getting a head start on your gift giving and make one this week. Then link it up to Lyndsey's blog, by Friday, to be eligible for amazing prizes!!

  3. Surprise muffins....open them hot out of the oven to find warm raspberry jam oozing out. Yum.........

  4. White chocolate raspberry bread - yum!

  5. My favourite muffin is a triple chocolate flax-seed muffin - it has cocoa, chocolate chips and I put hazlenut choc spread in the middle. And, because it is made largely with flax-seed, I feel it is more medicinal than 'naughty' so I make sure I have a muffin every day. (Just in case you didn't know, flax-seed has been shown to protect against cancer!) It is a case of having my cake and eating it!!!

Recently I made these Inside Out Carrot Cake muffins from King Arthur Flour bc I had an excess of carrots. The frosting is in the middle, they were to die for, def my favorite muffins! If you like cream cheese frosting, you'd love these.

  10. Ha! Well, it's a lovely basket, even if it's filled with hot dog buns. ;) I guess I can't blame the guys for eating the scones, because they sound amazing!

Hmm, it's hard to pick a favorite bread/muffin, but I loved this Smitten Kitchen whole-wheat apple muffin. They were delicious! http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2008/04/11/whole-wheat-apple-muffins/

Then you bite into the soft (yet still have its chewy side:)) and warm bread, n finally get to taste the firm, yummy n juicy sausage which is covered by just the right amount of lovely ketchup! Yum! (well, i was super hungry when i ate it last time. But the combination of the various textures was nice!)

Favourite bread, oh my, that would be any, I am a breadaholic - recently become quite keen on clootie dumpling scones available at a local coffee shop - full of warm spices and fruit it's like a wee bit of Christmas at any time!

  16. I love so many kinds of baked breads...asiago cheese, pumpkin, orange scones and more. I just finished making zucchini breads to photograph with my own version of the bread basket. Yours is delightful and looks great at the table!

  17. My favorite is the cinnamon rolls that we make every Christmas. The recipe comes down from my husband's great-grandma through his mother and grandmother. They are loaded with butter, so not something to make every day, but they sure are good once a year. We make a lot to give away as well as to eat and we always have some at Christmas breakfast as well as other occasions during the holidays.

  20. I LOVE lemon curd muffins, yummyness :-) perfect hot with ice cream!

  21. I agree, your basket is cute! You need to learn to hide a scone for yourself the night before. The basket would still be oh so cute, even with only one scone peeking over the edge. I think my favorite bread is a hearty cheese bread that my mom made years ago. Whole grains with pockets of melted cheese. Yummy with chili or potato soup.

  22. I love a good fresh baguette, and of course I've had the best in where else, Paris! Nice and crusty on the outside with a good crunch when you bite into it, and chewy yet airy on the inside!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I make banana bread with mini chocolate chips in it that is so good but also love some pumpkin apple muffins in the fall.

    ReplyDelete
  24. My favorite is a Rhubarb bread, the recipe which I got from my mom (and I just happened to get some rhubarb from the store today for it!)

I want to thank you for putting your cheap hotdog buns in the bag, because I wasn't going to make the bag because I was like...when do I need to carry around loafs of bread? but an idea like this for cookouts, or for scones or smaller breads, well duh! I need that!

  25. Nothing beats my grandmother's recipe for Banana Nut Bread. She used Crisco, so I often substitute with applesauce and it is still as moist as can be. With lots and lots of chopped walnuts. It's one of those comfort foods you need during the fall and winter months!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thanks for the chance! I've been working on making my own bread but I've yet to find a recipe I like the best ever yet, but I have made a potatoe starter that makes an awesome hamburger bun.

  27. This was a cute bag to make and fairly simple for a beginner. Now, if I can get my DH to bake some wonderful loafs of bread to go with it, I will be tickle pink. Judith, Texas

  28. Looking forward to trying this project! Carbs are my downfall -- bread, cupcakes, the list goes on and on... -- so I could give you six kinds of bread that I love to eat. Banana bread may be at the top of that list, but I couldn't say for sure... Thanks for the giveaway!

  29. OK it's Sweet Potato Walnut Bread, homemade by moi, of course!

  31. Bread is my downfall. But, I absolutely love a good raisin bread, preferably whole wheat with lots of chewy raisins inside. Always, a natural sourdough yeast bread is the base for any bread I like.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love bread anyway it comes, but my favourite has to be a Cottage Loaf fresh from the bakers! Really reminds me of my grandparents.

  33. We have a farmers market close to our home on a Sat and there is a stall that sells Rosemary and sea salt flat bread . You eat it by tearing chunks of it off and dipping into good quality olive oil . It's very yummy . Doesn't last long in this house !

  45. I am going to make the basket with some food fabric I have. Cute basket! My favorite bread is "pumpkin bread" that is like a loaf of bread and not like a banana bread. It's a nice bread that has pumpkin in it to make it a bit healthier for us. Recipe is here on Chef John's site: http://foodwishes.blogspot.com/2008/11/holiday-pumpkin-bread-you-want-it-but.html

Makes up real easy which is also a plus!

  46. that is such a cute bread basket! My MIL makes homemade bread all the time, this would be such a perfect present for her! Its hard to pick a favourite bread, but one of my go to ones is a simple homemade loaf with sun dried tomatoes, olives, cheese and ham cubes in the middle...nom!

  49. I'm sure the bread basket is adorable but I just had to giggle when you said the scones were eaten before you got up. I only have one son but I learned early on to put threatening notes on ANYTHING food related that was bought/made with a purpose in mind. Thanks for the laugh.

  52. I love the basket & will be trying to make one or two or three you get the idea. Yes they will be perfect for Holiday baking, but what if you filled it with sewing items, like Aurifil thread for a special sewing friend. Favorite baking would be banana raisin bread made with honey, served warm with a good cup of English Breakfast Tea.

  53. I have an excellent recipe for lemon poppy seed bread. It is easy to make and yields 2 loaves. My co-workers enjoy it for their coffee break.

Love your fabric choices for the basket you made. Great idea to use it for gift giving of baked goods.

    Thanks.

  54. Oh no, those rotten boys!! And your bag is so pretty! Do bagels count? Because Panera makes some amazing ones that I really want right now! Asiago with sundried tomato cream cheese and cinnamon sugar with hazelnut cream cheese are my absolute favorites...ahhh, I could really use one right now!

  55. Awesome job on this project! Bread is so yummy all these comments make me want to start baking again. I love homemade cheese bread with those yummy pockets of yummy goodness. You don't get that from a breadmaker machine {I've tried}. Also what's drooly good is homemade light wheat bready warmed or toasted with a little butter or spead and then dipped in brewers yeast. Ahhhh!

  56. Definitely white chocolate chip muffin with fudge chunks added in for good measure!

  57. My husband bakes a crispy-topped, round country styled loaf that's waft the house out with breadliness, hot out the oven, slather in the butter, baby, good. No fancy toppings, just down right delish. I should really be a good wife and stitch him up a bread basket to put it in, but in my defense his bread doesn't usually hang about too long. Thanks for hosting the giveaway! Berene

  61. Shoot, we're not even classy enough to get our hot dog buns at Safeway, we have to get ours here at Walmart! I miss shopping at Safeway!

I think my favorite bread is probably my grandma's zucchini bread. She's given me the recipe and I can make it myself, but it's just not as good as hers.

  62. The basket is so cute and I LOVE bread. I'd have to say that my most favorite bread would be a nice loaf of french bread ~ with a crunchy crust. Here in Portland, OR we have a few really good bakeries with the best bread. I have to be careful tho and get a small loaf because I'll end up eating the whole darn thing! teehee

  63. Don't you just love that Zakka book? Fun, fun, fun! Well, In a pinch I love to take the Bridgeford rolls, defrost and let rise, then brush them with a butter/honey combo and sprinkle with rosemary and sea salt. Easy and tasty. Yum!

  64. I might be too late to enter, but I love Cranberry Orange Scones - recipe from Taste of Home magazine. Yum! Thanks for wonderful chance! (At least you fed some hungry growing boys - hopefully they enjoyed them, but if it was my son, no, he scarfs things down too quickly to even let his taste buds know they're eating!)
